• The Wow! Signal: An Analysis of the 1977 Anomaly

  On August 15, 1977, the Big Ear radio telescope in Ohio detected a powerful, mysterious radio signal that became known as the "Wow!" signal. Discovered by Jerry R. Ehman while reviewing recorded data, this signal originated from the direction of the constellation Sagittarius and lasted for 72 seconds. Its frequency was close to 1420 MHz, a range researchers previously theorized might be used for interstellar communication because it matches the natural emission frequency of hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe. The signal's intensity was 30 times stronger than the background noise. Despite extensive efforts, including observing the same area of the sky over 122 days between 1977 and 1984, the signal has never been detected again. Theories regarding its origin range from alien communication to natural phenomena like comet passes or hydrogen cloud flare-ups, but no explanation has been confirmed. Consequently, the "Wow!" signal remains one of the most famous and intriguing unresolved anomalies in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
